Lung cancer

“The more interesting part is the fact that it is not only the smokers who suffer from lung cancer. It is true to our society as a whole”

In Macie Medical, September is declared the Lung Cancer Awareness Month. We want to break the silence surrounding this illness which affects so many, both within the Katy community and outside it. Lung cancer, surrounded by myths and worries and diagnosed at an advanced stage, requires more than ever the understanding and the action of today.

Understanding Lung Cancer

Primary lung cancer develops from the most surface epithelial cells in the bronchial tree or bronchi and can develop without any symptoms. Although smoking is the most common risk factor, it’s worth noting that non-smokers are not completely free from the threat. Risk factors such as secondhand exposure from smoking, industry pollution, and genetic reasons are also interrelated.

The Silent Progression

One of the challenges of lung cancer is that there are no symptoms most of the time. If they are present, they will usually not appear until the disease is more advanced and detection of the disease is more difficult and more important.

Your First Line of Defense: Primary Care

Primary health care is critical for the timely detection of disease. We as Macie Medical reiterate the need for screening and routine examinations for patients having a history of smoking or are under the lung cancer risk factors.

Prevention: The Best Cure

While we can’t change our genetic makeup, there are cancer screening steps we can all take to reduce our lung cancer risk:

  • Quit Smoking: It’s the single most effective way to lower your lung cancer risk.
  • Avoid Second hand Smoke: Advocate for smoke-free environments.
  • Test Your Home for Radon: Radon is a leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.
  • Eat Healthily and Exercise Regularly: A healthy lifestyle can reduce cancer risk.
